The percentage formula is the same everywhere — Matric, FSc, O/A Level or university:
Percentage = (Obtained Marks ÷ Total Marks) × 100
Worked example: a student scores 856 marks out of 1100. Divide 856 by 1100 to get 0.7782, then multiply by 100 — the percentage is 77.82%. This calculator does exactly that, and in subject-wise mode it first adds up all your obtained marks and all your total marks before applying the formula, which is how boards and universities calculate an overall result.
The "marks needed for a target" mode simply reverses the formula: Needed Marks = (Target % ÷ 100) × Total Marks. So for 80% out of 1100 total marks you need 0.80 × 1100 = 880 marks. Whole-mark answers are rounded up, because scoring slightly below the exact figure would leave you under your target.
