The four guide lines follow the equal-spaced layout used in Nelson handwriting and in school copybooks across Pakistan and the UK. Small letters — a, c, e, m, n, o and friends — sit exactly inside the middle band between the two inner lines. Tall letters and capitals — b, d, h, k, l, t — rise towards the top line, and letters with tails — g, j, p, q, y — drop towards the bottom line. Because all three bands are the same height, children learn consistent letter proportions from the very first sheet: the x-height, ascender and descender zones are visually obvious, so “tall”, “small” and “tail” letters each have a clear home.
